A kind of lop-sided pic of my tattoo. It’s by Ernst Haeckel from his book of lithographs/ autotype prints. Can you tell which of these is the one I chose from this image? I had a lot of choices. This one was the one I fell in love with. He was a cool guy, from his time for sure with some of his backassward “scientific racism” ideas, but he did more good for science than bad, and “he was one of the first to consider psychology as a branch of physiology. He also proposed many now ubiquitous terms including “anthropogeny”, “phylum”, “phylogeny”, “ecology” (“oekologie”), and proposed the kingdom Protista in 1866.” Among other things.

I got this tattoo because, yeah, it looks cool - but for me, it reminds me that we often overlook some of the more important things in life because they’re out of our sight — mentally and physically- (Diatoms are “estimated to contribute up to 45% of the total oceanic primary production.”(wikipedia)(In short, they are why we can breathe on this planet!), but ask an average person what a diatom is and they’ll look at you strangely, or they’ll see your tattoo and ask if it’s a sand dollar. The tattoo has become a teaching tool — people learn something from it - and usually they’re stunned or happy to have learned about diatoms.

I also got it to remind myself that we are linked to everything. And, most importantly, I got it to make sure I remember why I am doing what I am doing ( going back to school at 34?!) and to remember that I’ve come further than I’ve ever imagined in the past two years. This is my future. The one where I realize my dreams of helping, in my very small way, to change the world I live in. It’s what we should all be doing!

The crazy mating zombified dancers. The guy in the hawaiian shirt had been dancing for at LEAST 3 hours. The other lady gravitated towards him throughout the evening. At the end of the night, we believed we were watching a Nature documentary. When the music would stop, the dead eyes of the man would frighten me a little.

This screenshot was taken probably about 4 to 5 years ago. This was taken when the Blade’s Edge realm in WoW was new — and our guild, The Enlightened Order, was just starting to really form. We gathered all of our friends and did a naked Deadmines run, back in the day when Deadmines was REALLY long :) TEO is now a shell of its former self, and people have gone their separate ways, but this is really a good memento — as weird as it is, of the good times we had together :D! Long live TEO.

100 Days of Summer is on HBO right now — It reminds me of the first time I heard the song Sweet Disposition. It has a great soundtrack. It’s a sad movie though. Although, I like that he picks himself up after being sad and follows his passion of architecture!
